These 3 speed dewalt drills are designed a little differently.
Instead of having a plastic gear housing, the locking gear are contained on a gear train. With a external metal locking gear.
This system is normaly quite robust and trouble free.
But here the locking ring has worn out and the teeth are no longer engaging.

Replacing the locking gear ring solves the problem. It's actulay quite a quick and easy repair.
