NASA interns compete to create an X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology, or QueSST, laptop simulation. The summer project was conceived by NASA engineers working on the actual X-59, an experimental aircraft designed to gather data needed to help change the rules that currently ban supersonic flight over land. The goal of the simulation project is twofold: Interns get to put their engineering design skills to the test, implementing basic engineering principles to estimate and then verify their assumptions to create a close-to-accurate representation of the X-59; and NASA ultimately enhances its outreach and education in science, technology, engineering and math-related fields. Later this summer, the public will have the opportunity to become a virtual pilot and fly the X-59 through simulated skies. Users of the simulation can even enhance the simulation as they receive design updates during NASA’s journey of building and testing the aircraft. Stay tuned on www.nasa.gov/lowboom.
