If you want to take a screenshot of a an image or some text on your computer screen, press Shift-Command-4 simultaneously. Move the crosshair to where you want to start the screenshot, then drag to select an area.

When you've selected the area you want, release your mouse or trackpad button. Find the screenshot as a .png file on your desktop.

You can also use Shift + Command + 3 to screenshot the entire screen in a flash but this of course gives you the tool bars.
