At the most recent Lot More Guitar Studio Student Jam, one of my students performed the song "Wichita Lineman", written by Jimmy Webb and performed by Glen Campbell.
Known primarily as a singer to the general public, Glen Campbell is also a monster guitar player and was part of the famous group of session players, The Wrecking Crew. Sadly he passed away in 2017.
In preparation for the Jam, we listened to several live versions and were blown away by Glen's extended solos.
In this edition of my favorite licks, I will breakdown the second half of the solo on one of his last performances of the song, taken from the show Later with Jools Holland.
Here is a link to the segment: https://youtu.be/6GWF0RwVVjo?t=124
For quick reference, the basic chord sequence is D-C-G/B-BbMaj7-D-A7sus4-Bb-C-D
Campbell's genius shines as he navigates these changes, seamlessly blending melody and harmony using chord tones, passing tones, and chromatic notes to smoothly transition between chords.
He also adds subtle string bending and vibrato, adding depth and character to his lines.
As you practice each phrase, take note of the chord it is played over. When you have the lick under your fingers, transpose it up and down the fingerboard so you "own it" and can play it over the same type of chord in any key.
Master these licks and you will have some "Wrecking Crew" approved lines to apply in any situation. Have fun!
